OUR EXHIBITS

Our Exhibits

Almost everything we have in the museum has been donated by local families. We have items from the primitive early settlers up to late acquisitions. The museum is divided into vignettes to display related items. The “Homes” section has some of the oldest items that were used in early settlements. The “Schools” sections shows how Dublin wanted to have an educated population. The early rock schools were located on a hill so that those passing through could see them. The “Business” section shows the wide variety of businesses that helped make Dublin a thriving town. Our “Military” memorial room, make possible by the Powell-Davidson American Legion Post #219, is where we honor all who have served in the military supporting the United States. We also have a “Churches” section, a “Medical” section and an “Art” section featuring paintings by William Ed Bryan.

OUR FACILITIES

Our Facilities

Our first museum was a small building at the corner of Grafton and Blackjack Streets. It gave the Dublin Historical Society a firm start and our collection began almost immediately. Over the next 27 years some of the charter members began to feel overwhelmed by the upkeep of the museum. About that time, a retired school teacher, Mary Yantis, returned to Dublin with the enthusiasm to acquire a new larger building. The money was raised and we moved the Dublin Historical Museum down the street and into its larger facility that we are currently in. The first museum building was upgraded into the current Ben Hogan Museum. We have a historic grist mill that have been renovated and an early log cabin that was moved to the W.M. Wright Park. We have also acquired and renovated the Little Church on Grafton as a community meeting center.

OUR HERITAGE

Our Heritage

The museum was conceived in a Sunday school class in the First Baptist Church. Class members said that Dublin has such a rich history that we need a museum to display and preserve it. The editor of the local newspaper scheduled a meeting for those interested. In August 1970 the meeting members said “YES! We want a museum.” And the rest, as they say…..is history.

WRIGHT PARK

W. M. Wright Historical Park

The historic W.T. Wright grist mill was built in 1882, soon after the railroad arrived in Dublin.  It was the first rock building in Dublin’s downtown area. It was originally used to produce flour and corn meal. The grist mill was upgraded by 1921 to grind cattle feed and a grain storage elevator was added. A back room was added at that same time. The property was purchased by Ted Robbins and in 1974 was given to the Dublin Historical Society.
